Senate Gridlock Extends American Government Shutdown Into Week Two
US lawmakers have for a fourth time failed to pass funding bills to resume the federal government, continuing the current stalemate into next week.
Two separate spending proposals - one from the Democrats and one by Republicans - failed to reach the necessary 60-vote threshold.
While lawmakers at an impasse, the administration on Friday said it would be confronted by the "hard decision" of substantial job cuts to keep essential government services running if the closure persists.
Healthcare Disagreement Remains Core Issue
Each of the Republican and Democratic lawmakers have stood their ground on the primary area of conflict: medical coverage. Democrats have hoped to take advantage of the stalemate to secure health insurance subsidies for individuals having limited income do not expire and undo earlier cuts to the public health initiative.
Conservative legislators, alternatively, have consistently alleged Democrats of halting the federal operations in a effort to extend healthcare to illegal immigrants - a charge that opposition officials have disputed.
Ballot Outcomes and Political Division
Some 54 lawmakers approved a conservative-backed measure to finance the government, with 44 rejecting and two abstaining.
A separate, Democrat-led proposal similarly didn't pass, with 45 approving and 52 opposed.

White House Position
"Monetary effects of this shut down are growing daily," the official added, indicating that $15bn in economic output could be lost each week as joblessness increases.
White House spokespeople have repeatedly committed to lay off federal workers if the closure persists, and in recent days the president posted that he would confer with the leader of the OMB to assess "which of the many organizations" that ought to be reduced.
Executive representatives has declined to offer scope or timeframe for possible lay-offs or reductions to organizations.
Monetary Impact and Regional Financing
During the US government's response to the shut down, the budget office on the weekend announced the suspension of $2.1bn in federal public works support for the Windy City, in addition to the prior suspension of $18bn in public works expenditure in New York City and the cancellation of roughly eight billion dollars in financing for federal energy programs in several Democrat-controlled regions.
Political Future
During legislative proceedings, the Democratic leader said that his party are battling the health insurance concern because "we believe citizens desire this".
"Additionally several of my Republican counterparts support this as also," he stated. "However inaction would be disastrous, and GOP lawmakers know it."
Some opposition members - including senators from New York and PA - said they want to hear directly from the president about the ongoing deadlock.
Citing a bipartisan border bill that the chief executive ultimately rejected previously, they said they concern that all talks with GOP lawmakers could finally be rejected by the president.
Popular Opinion
Early opinion research have indicated that US citizens are strongly divided on the closure, with one recent survey administered on the first of October discovering that 47% of the population hold responsible GOP, versus 30% who hold responsible Democrats.
A further 23% said they were uncertain.
