Finest Television Choices: Seven Essential Movies This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire tackles the tyranny of women's appearance as well as the dreaded aspects of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a brilliant acting turn playing Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into starring in a workout series on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying procedure titled the Substance. This generates a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in an increasingly parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful mystery stars the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a break from writing about global conflict to board an opulent ship alongside an ailing wealthy inheritor and donor, her spouse, plus additional affluent passengers. However when an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries with this innovative paranormal narrative filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor embraces his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic film star playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a birthday party in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method proves useful. October 11th, evening, Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's contained scarefest stands strong even without a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a basement, he anticipates a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Chastain succeeds to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry by the same director presents a espionage tale as precise like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission to identify a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are masters of understated style, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
