England Explore for World Cup Bases Amid Concerns of Losing First-Choice Base to Holland.
England's football governing body has dispatched operational staff to the America this week to evaluate potential bases for the upcoming global finals, amid growing concerns that their preferred site could be allocated by the Holland.
Draw Complexities Alter Arrangements
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had previously approved an FA proposal for England to be based in Kansas following a pre-tournament training period in Fort Lauderdale. Yet, after the recent group stage draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who play their group games in Kansas, will be given first refusal on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre used by US Soccer.
FIFA assigns training bases based on geography and FIFA rankings if there is competition, with the draw possibly placing the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's central region.
Considering Other Options
With England's group stage matches scheduled to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be exploring other locations on the eastern seaboard. The association began its search for training camps at the start of the year, with Tuchel and technical director John McDermott visiting potential locations during the Club World Cup last summer.
In spite of this early planning, there was always an understanding that the final tournament draw could drastically change their logistical arrangements.
Later Round Travel Plans
The Three Lions have the eighth most arduous group stage draw in terms of travel. Winning Group L would put England on track for a last-32 game in Atlanta, then a possible round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
- Major Departure: The FA may opt to choose to travel from match to match for the later rounds if England qualify, a major departure from its usual practice of having a single tournament base.
- FIFA Encouragement: FIFA is understood to be recommending such a flexible strategy for the expansive 2026 tournament.
After the base camp is confirmed, the FA will focus on organizing two warm-up matches in Florida at the start of June.
